Rejection and Her Ugly Sister, Doubt

For the past month I've been working on submitting some of my 2015 weddings to different inspiration blogs. Yesterday, I received my 4th rejection and I have to tell you: it sucks. Every wedding Shawn and I photograph I feel the improvement in us as a partners and as photographers, but being sent denials starts to wear on me. It makes me feel completely inadequate and almost as if all the progress I see is not real. Nothing really compares to skimming an email for the word "unfortunately", and then shutting down when you see it. There isn't any way to prepare for it or deal with it any better. But the more I've put our work out there, the shorter my "shut down" time has become. What use to take half of a day of repeatedly analyzing and thinking of what I possibly did wrong has now turned into responding with a "thank you for your consideration" and moving on. My photos might not be for everyone or every blog, but I do know that there is a place out there for myself and others with a similar style. It's just about digging through all those rejections and finding the eventual acceptance email. Disclaimer: In the process of writing my thank you emails, I do sit for about 5 minutes just staring at the words, wishing they could wrap me up in a tight hug, haha. Everyone has to face rejection at some point in their...

Our Relaxing Trip to Salem, Massachusetts

After Shawn and I finished photographing Lindsay and Stephanie's wedding, we went to a place that I have an odd obsession with: Salem. Everything from the rich history to the bright yellow leaves on the trees I was in love with. We took a tour through the Witch Museum, which was like living in my 10th grade English books. Seeing everything that I had learned about through the years was incredibly fascinating. Not to mention that the shops in Salem are absolutely adorable! They have a Harry Potter wand store, which looks like it was straight out of the movie. I wanted to buy a wand so badly, but thankfully Shawn was there to talk me off the edge (and tell me to wait until we visit HP World in Disney :P). We fully intend on going back in order to see the house from Hocus Pocus, haha! We only got spend a little of our afternoon in the small city before we started the 8 hour drive home, but we ate lunch at Scratch Kitchen. Best. Grilled Cheese. Ever. I think I can safely speak for Shawn when I say we could have lived within this restaurant. It was such a unique spot with all of the ingredients being local and fresh. Though we loved visiting, I didn't end up taking many photos at all. Shawn and I really just enjoyed being with each other on a great fall afternoon :). This was an absolutely perfect way to...

Adventures in Camping

It Rained All Weekend

Two weekends ago, Shawn and I decided that it would be really fun to go camping. He had received A LOT of camping gear from his parents, my parents, and me this past Christmas, so we had to start using it at some point! We travelled out to Elk Neck State Park up in North East, Maryland (this isn't the general area of the park, it's the name of the town where the park was located, this made my parents really confused for some reason :P.) When we finally were finished shopping at the local Walmart for food, extra sweat pants, and blankets (it was freezing) we finally made it to our campsite. It was around 10:30 pm and pitch black out, we didn't know where the other campsites were located and we thought we heard water nearby, but we couldn't be sure. Shawn, being the expert wilderness man he is, quickly set up the tent and I sorta helped move all our stuff in - I don't think I was very helpful because I was busy taking night pictures, which I will show but not until the end of this post since they are my favorite! We fell asleep pretty quickly and the next day it rained the entire morning and was forecasted to rain most of the day. When we caught a break in the downpour Shawn and I were starving so we got the stove, the sausage, and the pancake mix ready and made the fastest...

A Day in the Life

Family Day at the Carnival

On Tuesday my family and I went to the carnival at Harundale Plaza, it was still daylight out so there wasn't that many people out yet, which made the day really great! My niece and nephew are 10 and 8, having them run around in a crowded area never sounds like a fun time, being able to walk around with them and take photographs without that worry of watching them like a hawk as they zig zag through groups was definitely a relief. Since they pretty much had the whole park to themselves there was no lines and they rode all the "non-scary" rides in about 30 mins....and they rode those rides two or three times that has to be some kind of record, hahah! Shawn and I even got to ride some of the rides, which was exciting - I actually forgot how scary that giant slide is. But of course Shawn had more of an exciting time since he got to ride the ferris wheel AND the bumper cars, my nephew is crazy about Shawn, so as soon as we got into the carnival Danny exclaimed, "SHAWN AND ME ARE GOING ON THE FERRIS WHEEL!" :) So cute.  I wish every day could be like this.                         Such a fun day! ...

A Homemade Valentine for My Love

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, EVERYONE!!! Even though everyone makes a big deal out of it being a romantic, Ineedaboyfriendorgirlfriendtoenjoyit, day I've always thought of it as kind of a day to celebrate with anyone. It's never been a hated day in my eyes, I mean, I get candy from my step-dad, my mom tells me she loves me (she does that all the time, but it's a "HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, I LOVE YOU thing) it's just a good day to either spend it with family or a significant other. Maybe I'm the only one that looks at it that way, but I guess my parents never made me feel like it was a day that HAD to be spent with a boyfriend, heck, before I had boyfriends they would take me and my step-sister out to dinner with them. So, YEAH, moral of this story is - you don't need to blacklist this day just because you don't get taken out to a fancy dinner with a girlfriend or boyfriend, your family can help make the day just as happy :).  ANYWAY, last month I tried to make my own stamps, I was very happy with the results! I know I just got done saying how YOU DON'T NEED NO MAN, but I do have one and he does make me very happy, so my motivation to...

A Day in the Life

A Christmas Thor-y

This Christmas was pretty cool. I received a lot of great camera stuff from my mom and step-dad and even got a Kinect from them too! What was more fun than the things I got was the fact that the previous night I had spent the whole day with parents and, since I usually stay next door at my grandma's house, I spent the night in my old room. It was a lot of fun getting to wake up on Christmas, go into my parent's room, and bug them at 7:30am, instead of having to call them, and then walk over, and blah blah blah boring stuff! Unfortunately, my mom wouldn't wake up, so I had to sit for 30 minutes with my dog, Thor, by the Christmas tree. I started thinking how his health and spunk haven't been what they use to be and that he's already 10 years old. I decided right there that I would show how Thor's Christmas went, it was a fun little project for the morning and helped past the time while my mom and step-dad slept (but seriously? Who sleeps on Christmas?).   Thor waiting patiently (much better than me) FINALLY! Mom woke up! Ready for presentssssssss   Hahaha   Wasting nooo time (he also stole a lot of his Busy Bones behind our backs)   After chowing on his treats, it was time for breakfast. But Thor's begging got him kicked out of the kitchen :P Thanking Mom for his...

Adventures in the Park

We had a Picnic

Wahhhhh, I haven't updated in forever! Okay, two weeks. A little update: I've been sick for the past two weeks, so I haven't been able to do much posting. I'm going to be posting TWICE this week, tonight, (obviously) and then tomorrow (which will be a Halloween-ish blog). I feel like I need to make-up for what I have not posted! And since I am feeling kinda better, I'm able to concentrate on something other than a cup of tea and the inside of my eye lids :P. ANY WHO! Two weekends ago my boyfriend, Shawn, and I took a little trip to Patapsco State Park, we had visited there before (I wrote a blog on that time as well) but that time was just a hiking adventure. THIS time had food involved, which made it an infinity times more cool!    Our graffiti table   We had apple slices Black bottom cuppiecakes and....   BIRTHDAY PLATES THAT WERE 99 CENTS!    We actually had a lot more food (sandwiches, chips, and watermelon), but we ate those items too quickly :P. After our lunch time was over we started walking around the park, it was chilly and all fall like with leaves everywhere and orange and yellow colors, really, really splendid.               Hmmmm, the day was perfect...

For My Grandmother

A Life Time

Sweet sun Send me the moon Empty the skies out Bringing me one step closer to you Send it soon And I will breathe in, breathe out Until you come in and out Of view Of view   I've been putting off this blog....On October 4th my great grandma passed away, it wasn't sudden to everyone else, but I guess every death to me feels unexpected. She was 93, soon to be 94 on November 25th, she had a wonderful life, a great family...she had the life that most don't get to have. I wrote a blog about her a little bit ago, so there isn't much I can say. I loved her a tremendous amount and I really did believe that she was going to live for forever. That sounds really naive, but she was special to me. I took hundreds of photos of her all the time, she was interesting, she was spectacular, she was every positive adjective I can think of. Even with all of my photos and videos of her and small nicknacks she had....it just doesn't feel like enough. There is something to be said about a little old lady who made a 22 year old feel completely safe; I lived right above her in the top apartment of her house and ever since she has been gone I am scared of every little bump. I mean, I was scared of...

Looking at Old Family Photos

Memories of the Past

First, I really love old photographs and it doesn't matter to me if it is my family or someone else's family, I just looooove them! Second, my grandma found a tin full of old family photos in my great grandma's house, so, naturally, I swiped the tin and took it to my apartment to look through. As I started sifting through the photos I noticed there were A LOT from when my great grandpa was in (I think) the Korean War, which were really interesting because I had only seen a few photographs of him from when he was younger. Half of the photos of him were with his buddies, a few were with random women (before he married my great grandma), and then the rest were shots of the army equipment and the land. As I neared the bottom of the tin I found a SUPPPPER old photo of my great grandma when she was probably 12 years old. I sat and stared at it for a little while because I see my great grandma how she is now and how she has been for my entire life, but then I see this photo of a little girl that claims to be her, it makes me slightly teary eye'd to see the younger her, I can't really explain it. But I know that it makes me love photographs even more. Of couse there were the other standard...

Documenting My Favorite Person

My Grandmother

So this weeks blog is a little different than my previous ones. I was having trouble figuring out what I wanted to write about, so I sat and thought about it pretty much all day. I didn't know if I wanted to do something informative, something fun, or just something! I had my portfolio sitting by me and I started looking through it, I came to the photos that I had taken for my Documentary Photo class last Spring and started thinking how much fun I had photographing my great-grandma. She is going to be 93 this November, her mind is fading at a fairly normal rate, it has been so gradual that I actually didn't get emotional over it. It hurts that she no longer knows me, but I remember all the times I have had with her and what a wonderful grandma she has always been. She is an amazing woman and inside her mind are hundreds of stories from her childhood and adulthood locked away. I wish the mind was something that you could look into because the one thing I miss the most about her being "with it" are her stories. Luckily, I heard them A LOT while she would baby-sit me when I was a youngin', so I can recall a good amount of them :). So, I walked downstairs (because she lives right below me) and I started to photograph some of her things.    (pictures of me and my brother) When...

Adventures in the Park

Take a Hike

So on Saturday, my boyfriend, Shawn, and I went to Patapsco State Park because it was close to my house and we wanted to go walk some trails. It was a pretty cool day (temperature wise) and fun to get out and do something natury :). I took my camera and took a bunch of pictures of the trails, trees, and of course Shawn :P. He actually didn't mind me having my camera pointed at him most of the time, he is a big ham so I think he enjoyed it quite a bit. Anyway, we stayed out there for about an hour and a half and then walked back since the park was closing at 8:30 and it was currently 8:40 :P. I took a little looksy at the images and decided that I haven't played enough with this pack of filters I got for Photoshop, so I did that! Got some cool results with it and I only used like....4 of the different color effects on my images and there are about 100 others! I gots a lot of fun ahead of me! :D IMAGE TIME!     ...

My Christmas

2010 Presents Galore

Christmas was really awesome this year! I got a lot of great things for my camera, which was what I was mainly happy about :D. I also got a spongebob hat for when I go snowboarding that was pretty awesome as well! For Christmas I went to my mom's house, opened up all my gifts there and then ate breakfast. From that point we all went to my brother's to watch my nephew and niece open their bagillion gifts! They ripped through them all like pros, of course. I got a bunch of photos and movies of them opening their gifts and of course I took some pictures of just random things that interested me. I'm going to post mainly the random ones because I doubt anyone wants to see a nine year old and a 6 year old opening gifts XD. Soooooooo, here you go with the images! :D Definitely a lot more random than the above: I hope everyone had a great Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other holidays that are celebrated with your family :D! HAPPY NEW YEAR, as well!! ...

Winter Time in Maryland

Also a Happy Birthday to my Niece

So, the semester is over and Christmas is upon us. Maryland had it's first semi awesome snow-fall, which was....ACTUALLY AWESOME! I went outside and, of course, took photos :). I don't have much to write in this entry, so I'll just show some photos from my time spent outside in the beautiful wonderfullness that is snow.   At this point, I started to have a camera love affair with my shoes. I have a bunch more images, but I thought two were enough :P And finally, a silly image of myself that shows the level of happy that snow gives me. I truly love snow and winter in general <3 Less than a week until Christmas! EEEEEEEE :D. I am so excited for Christmas this year! The first time in two years I have actually been happy for Christmas to be right around the corner :) I fell off the wagon with the blog updating these past couple of weeks, I promise I will try to not let that happen again :) ...

My Time at UMBC

School Photography Projects

So, I'm quickly approaching the end of my fall senior semester. All of my projects are running together, I'm finding it difficult to sleep, and my brain is just going 10,000 mph. Even though all of my projects have been done at pretty much the last possible second, I still find them quite successful. One of my most recent projects was to make a story book, I used my niece because I love photographing her. I'm not going to go through the whole story because not all of the photos are that great, but there was three that followed each other that I absolutely loved. The story was basically a secret garden type adventure with finding a key and seeing where it goes. Anyway, here are those photos.   Also, for another project, I needed to work in my schools studio. Here are some photos from that :) Well, that is about it for tonight :). Enjoy ...

A Day in the Life

Family Fun Time

Well, I haven't updated in a while, I have been super swamped with projects at school, tests, papers, internship, etc. Anyway, I'm here now! I have some exciting news, I received my NEW camera!!! EEEEKK, I haven't had much time to play with it, but yesterday my niece and nephew were over, so I got the chance to take some pictures of them and some photos of the stuff around me. I had to use my niece as a subject for one of my classes, I'll post those photos once I'm done worrying about it. So, for today, there are no photos from summer! Hahaha, these photos are all from yesterday and I'm totally in love with my new Nikon. Reading in 2015. What the heck was I thinking with my editing XD. ...
